Benevento - Campania
The town of Benevento is situated in the region
of Campania, between the rivers Sabato and Calore,
50 km northeast of Naples. It is situated on a hill
130m (300 ft) above sea-level where the castle of
Benevento, best known as Rocca dei Rettori or Rocca
di Manfredi, stands commanding the valley of the
rivers and the two main ancient roads Via Appia
and Via Traiana. The Roman Triumphal Arch, (114
to 117 A.D.) in the Emperor Trajan’s honour, stands
in the centre of the town. Also of note are the
Cathedral of S. Maria Assunta, dating from the 9th
century and the church of Santa Sofia of the 12th
century.
