Varese - Lombardy Varese is a city in
north-western Lombardy, northern Italy, 55 km north
of Milan. Due to its many hill and lakeside villas,
each set within a landscape of lawns, flowerbeds
and trees, Varese is nick-named the “Garden City”.
In the centre lies the largest of them all: Palazzo
Estense, which dates back to 1787. The economy of
Varese is mainly based on industry and, to a lesser
extent, specialized agriculture; some famous Varese-based
firms are Aermacchi (military trainer aircraft)
and Agusta (helicopters). In 1859, Giuseppe Garibaldi
confronted Austrian forces led by Field Marshal-Lieutenant
